History

CompuPay was founded in 1980 by a Miami based entrepreneur. Over the years, the company grew in the markets of New York City, Seattle, Phoenix and South Florida both directly and through a group of licensees. The company eventually purchased the licensed operations and operated under a single umbrella.

In January of 2004, controlling interest in the company was sold to Willis Stein and Partners, LLC, a Chicago based private equity group. This is Willis Stein’s second investment in the payroll processing industry following their highly successful investment in Advantage Payroll Services. With Willis Stein’s experience in the industry and their commitment to invest up to $100 million, CompuPay embarked on a very exciting journey.

During 2004, CompuPay made its first acquisition in TPM, a California based payroll processor, opened new offices in San Diego, Atlanta, Sacramento and Tucson and significantly expanded its sales force presence in all of its markets.

Charlie Lathrop joined CompuPay in January of 2005 as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, having successfully led Advantage Payroll Services to become a highly respected national payroll company. Since his arrival, CompuPay has continued to implement its aggressive growth strategy by building an industry leading management team and making significant investments in training and technology.

In July of 2005, CompuPay made its second significant acquisition of PayMaxx, Inc. PayMaxx, was a Tennessee-based payroll provider and online pioneer who served a broad client base with leading payroll technology.

In 2006 and 2007, CompuPay opened several new offices across the country including offices in Florida, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Colorado, Illinois, Maine and Texas.

In 2008, CompuPay completed two acquisitions, Advanced Payroll Systems in Modesto, California and Key Payroll Online in Seattle, Washington. Most recently, CompuPay entered into an agreement with Sage Software to provide outsourced payroll services to Sage clients including users of Peachtree, Abra, Accpac ERP, BusinessWorks Accounting, MAS 90 ERP and MAS 200 ERP.

Currently, with offices across the United States, CompuPay is the second largest independently owned payroll service in the country and the fourth largest overall. CompuPay clients employ between one and ten thousand employees each and have come to expect the best in payroll products and services. Our continued growth and success is due to our commitment to our vision statement of “Being the Best! One Payroll at a Time.“
